Thats what they said on the news. That the guys were getting literally "beaten up" by huge 15+ foot swells, they didn't get a break. And they'd been holding on since Saturday Afternoon... and that the constant exertion to hold on, plus dehydration, and mild hypothermia, they were probably not "thinking straight".
Whats so sad, is that the two football players gave up at 2am (the survivor was rescued at approx 11 am) If they just could have held on for 9 more hours, or the third one, who decided to swim for shore about 6:30 am.. 4 1/2 more hours, They were so close.
But of course they couldn't have known that. How horribly sad.
Can you imagine the "Survivor's Guilt" the one who survived must be feeling. I can't imagine.
Just a horrible tragedy.
They were saying the one who tried to swim for shore, thought his life jacket would slow him down and/or keep taking him back to sea. He thought his best chance was without one. They also said that clearly, he was not thinking clearly.
They were cautioning people, "STAY with the boat!" Its easier to spot a boat, than an individual. And esp in this situation, the boat was still anchored, so they weren't a "moving target"....
I just can't imagine that feeling of "giving up". But I also can't imagine be lost in the middle of the ocean for the amount of time that they were. The boat capsized when it was still light out on Saturday... so they were holding on for what? like 30 something hours? 2 nights holding onto the boat.
It just makes me sad.
