This problem is more common than you think.

Main reasons-

1) Volume is muted, but you don't have the icon in your task bar so you don't see the crossed out icon. Go into control panel, and depending on your version of Windows (if you're running Windows of course) you will see settings for Multimedia, or sound, or something descriptive. Check the different tabs until you see "show volume control in taskbar". When you get the icon there, make sure it's not muted and the volume slider is up most of the way.

2) Most sound cards(even on laptops), have 3 holes.
1. mic
2. speaker
3. line in

Normal "surround" hookups, would put the Front speakers in "speaker", Center speaker in "mic" or "line in", and Rear speakers taken the connection that is left over. Oftentimes "line in" is used to pull audio from some external source such as an mp3 player.

3) Check to see if the output is set to digital or analog then set it to what you need for your speakers. Sometimes the settings are set to digital surround sound but the speakers are analog.

4) Some laptops have a hard to see dial on the side, or the back...if it's turned all the way down you aren't going to get any sound regardless of the settings of the "volume control" icon. Sometimes you have to balance the dial against the volume control slider for the best audio quality.
