Fossil Ida: extraordinary find is 'missing link' in human evolution

Perfectly preserved fossil Ida, unveiled in New York today, provides unprecedented insight into our ancestry

Scientists have discovered an exquisitely preserved ancient primate fossil that they believe forms a crucial "missing link" between our own evolutionary branch of life and the rest of the animal kingdom.

The 47m-year-old primate – named Ida – has been hailed as the fossil equivalent of a "Rosetta Stone" for understanding the critical early stages of primate evolution.

The top-level international research team, who have studied her in secret for the past two years, believe she is the most complete and best preserved primate fossil ever uncovered. The skeleton is 95% complete and thanks to the unique location where she died, it is possible to see individual hairs covering her body and even the make-up of her final meal – a last vegetarian snack.

"This little creature is going to show us our connection with the rest of all the mammals; with cows and sheep, and elephants and anteaters," said Sir David Attenborough who is narrating a BBC documentary on the find. "The more you look at Ida, the more you can see, as it were, the primate in embryo."

Don't tell the Creationists!

Oh wait, it's ok, they'll say "God planted it there to test our faith".

They will.

Unfortunately, of all the industrialized countries in Europe and Asia, the Christian dominated United States is almost "dead last" in its acceptance of modern evolutionary theory. Only the country of  Turkey lags behind the U.S on this issue.

The Pew Institute, which periodically investigates and takes polls on matters of religious belief, has recently indicated that more than half of the people in the U.S do not believe  in modern concepts of "evolution" and instead adhere to the "creationist" views as held by the Bible,  and expressed in Genesis.

Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kansas,  Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas and Wisconsin are all recently in the process of revising, reshaping, modifying, the science curriculum in their schools,  to downgrade the status of evolution,  and to provide space for creationism and Intelligent Design to eventually be taught as a competing theory.

And "yes", the basic fundamental Christian response to the news of the discovery of this 'transitional" fossil "Ida", has elicited the predictable , expected responses.

I offer a summary, a sampling,  of only some of the objections, I have  found in the media these last few days:

( 1.) ( direct quote ) "The age of this fossil was determined by Radiometric dating?. Everyone knows that Radiometric dating doesn't work.!"

( 2. ) Satan put the fossils in the ground to detract the faithful from God's real work.
( A direct quote.)  "Yep, just look at all the false evidence planted and how many suckers fall for it." and,
" Satan revels in helping non-believers ignore their higher thought-the ability to understand and acknowledge the existence of God, the Most High."

( 3. ) God put the fossils in the ground to test  His followers faith in Him.

( 4. ) The fossils were the animals that died in the Great Noachian Flood of  4000 years ago.

( 5.)  ( direct quote. ) "47 million years ago? Ridiculous.  Everyone knows the Earth is only 6000 years old!"

 ( 6.)  ( direct quote.)  "This is a complete fraud from a fossil-producing factory."

And there are so many more...

Origin of Species was written by Charles Darwin in 1859. How ever, It appears that  for much of the U.S , it is still the 1800's.

Another signpost leading to why the U.S. will soon find itself "dead last" period.

Pity that the powers-that-be insist on 'dumbing down' the populace because to be a good and faithful consumer requires no high level of intelligence.

Are you familiar with Charlotte Thomson Iserbyt's book, "The Deliberate Dumbing Down of America" or John Taylor Gatto's book, "Dumbing Us Down"?

All this religious fervour and violation of Church and State separation works right into the hands of those who wish to maintain power and control through stupidity.

Of course, it is ultimately the populace's fault for allowing them to succeed in this.
