You Think You've Got Morale Problems?
04:10 PM Thursday April 23, 2009

By John Baldoni

President Barack Obama visited CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia the other day to speak to CIA employees. In doing so, the President was doing what every senior leader needs to do in times of crisis: be seen and be heard.

People of good intention from all sides of the political spectrum have different views of the CIA, but inside the agency, employees have been feeling beleaguered and demoralized.

Therefore, in some ways, what has occurred at "The Company" is akin to what is occurring in many companies. It fell to the President, as it falls to all senior leaders, to rally the troops. While debate will continue to swirl around the CIA, what the President said and did at Langley is worthy of study for leaders seeking insight to communicating in tough times.

I agree with the first but not the second part of your assertion.  I don't recall having many good feelings about Ren & Stimpy but, at first, I was only suspicious.

I'm thinking back to right after the WTC was hit, and GW gave that great speech to get the country motivated in a time of unprecedented crisis. I was thinking, "this guy might just get us through this".

In fact, he had a good speech writer, nothing more.

Hmm, my recollection is a bit different though. I can't remember one speech from GW that seemed very well spoken.  He had good writers, he just wasn't a good speaker.  Obama is both.

Now granted a strong communicator does not necessarily make a good leader, BUT a good leader SHOULd be a strong communicator. It shouldn't be one of those "nice to haves" as far as presidential traits...ya know?

I think it was because he was telling us what we wanted to hear. His bumbling and fumbling and total ineptitude was lost in the midst of the crisis. It wasn't lost for long.

I always expected "git 'r done" to come rolling off his tongue. I think it might have a time or two. LOL
