: Norton users beware : Fine Point March 10, 2009, 05:41:59 AM PIFTS.EXE
Here is a blog (http://www.tech-linkblog.com/2009/03/conspiracy-theories-run-rampant-due-to-piftsexe.html/#) wherein the author is asking questions about this odd pop up. Users of Norton's community forums are astounded, as reported in this blog, by Norton's aggressive deleting of all threads discussing this executable file. This google search (http://www.google.co.za/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=+site:community.norton.com+%22PIFTS.EXE%22) reveals deleted threads. For those talented enough to understand here is the file (http://www.mediafire.com/?mnmh35b9d0k) if you wish to examine it or you may choose to examine the .exe strings instead (http://pastebin.com/m1e207a78). Apparently PIFTS.EXE accesses the user's Internet Temporary Files, History and then, for some reason, Google. Is it being suggested that Norton is using this file to spy on users and their surfing habits? Stranger things have happened... |
